Users Stopping Weight-Loss Jabs Gain Back Pounds at a Quadrupled Rate Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover shed pounds far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.

Findings released in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People using these treatments need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of regain suggests a reversion to starting mass within about 18 months.

Weighing Therapies

The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.

Researchers note that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a slower weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.

These medications mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Sustained high doses of the hormone levels several times higher than the body's typical production could lead to the system to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Issue?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication describe a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," described one woman.

This challenge is compounded if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Interest

Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest being substantial.

  • Adoption is greater among women compared to males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
  • Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and maintained weight loss likely depends on ongoing lifestyle support.
